What should you do if you’re caught outside during a storm? Lightning hits the tallest available object, so get down low in a crouched position if you’re in an exposed area. Also:

  • Stay away from trees.
  • Don’t hold metal items such as bats, golf clubs, fishing rods, tennis rackets or tools.
  • Stay away from metal sheds, clotheslines, poles and fences.
  • Avoid water, including pools, lakes and puddles – and anything damp, such as grass.
  • Don’t stand close to other people. Spread out.

Is there any sort of warning before lightning strikes? Not necessarily – but if you feel a tingling sensation or your hair stands on end, lightning may be about to strike. Don’t lie down; instead, crouch down, tuck your head and cover your ears.

Are you safe from lightning if you stay inside the house? Follow these indoor safety tips:

  • Stay away from windows, doors and skylights.
  • Unplug electronic equipment before the storm arrives. But avoid contact with electrical equipment and cords during storms.
  • Don’t touch water and plumbing fixtures, including sinks, bathtubs, toilets or faucets.

Can you talk on the telephone during an electrical storm? Use a corded telephone only in an emergency. However, it’s okay to use cordless or cellular phones inside. Is it okay to leave a dog outside during a lightning storm? Doghouses are not lightning-safe, and chained animals easily can become victims of lightning strikes. Bring your pets inside to protect them.
